Review:
I honestly don’t know what much to say about the characters. This series felt way more plot driven than character driven. Oh Yeon-joo (Han Hyo-joo) is a surgeon who happened to be transported into the webtoon of “W” which has a domino effect having one thing lead into another. One problem is resolved, the next appears. She has a big heart for the people she loves which allows her to bear through everything she becomes entangled in.
I would definitely hate to be in Kang Cheol (Lee Jong-suk)’s position. As a webtoon character he has a tragic backstory, has an antagonist he has committed his whole life over finding, and has some random person (aka the artist) controlling how his future plays out. He’s also willing to sacrifice and do whatever needs to be done to protect his loved ones, whether physically or emotionally. He’s clever and sharp, a fun protagonist to watch as he delves deeper into the mysteries.
These two were cute together and had chemistry since their opposing demeanors created a contrast amongst them, making it entertaining to watch these two interact. Kang Cheol had his sweet side with Oh Yeon-joo after they’ve been together for a while, but the boldness of Kang Cheol with the softness of Oh Yeon-joo was amazing.
The plot! The plot drove this kdrama forward. When one thing was resolved, the next problem arose. At first I was so confused as to what would happen in the rest of the series. Though, eventually, I got the hang of the structure of the series. You would think everything would seem like too much and too choppy due to the plot being focused on various problems and stories. Though, the stories and issues were all connected and there weren’t many plot holes that I noticed. Things were intertwined together and the show had layers, one thing would be peeled off to reveal another, like an onion! Though, towards the end I did start to want this series to end since right before the ending turn of events, things did dwindle and the differing plots did just made the series feel like it was dragging on just a bit.
The mysteries were interesting and wow was the makeup artist or CGI-er amazing! The mysteries were so interestingly connected and so crazy cool in general! The causes or motives behind the reasons things occurred made complete sense and one solution to one mystery would have some connection to other events that happened afterwards.
Also, there were some solid side characters in this series. Lee Tae-hwan (Seo Do-yoon) and Park Soo-bong (Lee Si-eon) were such caring and loyal side characters. Park soo-bong stuck by Oh Yeon-joo’s side whichever way he could and did. Helped in every way he could and was so worried about her whenever she’d get sucked into the issues of webtoon life. Lee Tae-hwan barely asked any questions when Kang Cheol asked him to do things that made no sense or anything and continued to look after him even though Lee Tae-hwan himself needed to take care of himself. These two were so amazing!
