Book Review: Ignite Me

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Genre: Fantasy, Romance

Yeah…this was supposedly the best book from the series. But it gave…nothing? Nothing important at least besides the build up to war and romance that felt so surface level.

Synopsis:

With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn't know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won't keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that's not all he wants with her.

The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. Tahereh Mafi has created a captivating and original story that combines the best of dystopian and paranormal and was praised by Publishers Weekly as "a gripping read from an author who's not afraid to take risks."

Review:

So Juliette’s major MAJOR character development was the best! Probably the second best thing in the book after Kenji. Kenji genuinely carried! Back to Juliette, though. The transformation after her near death experience made complete sense since such a near death experience can definitely change one’s perspective on life. She grew stronger and bolder, completely coming out of her fragile shell she previously was stuck in.

Adam’s transformation, on the other hand, was not it. He suddenly went from sad, mopey boy, to erupting like a volcano every time he laid his eyes on Juliette. He was acting so jealous and immature, after the whole second book it was time for him to move on.

Evidence for why Kenji is the best: “I am going to MURDER YOU—”

“No,” he says, pointing at me as he shifts backward again. “Bad Juliette. You don’t like to kill people, remember? You’re against that, remember? You like to talk about feelings and rainbows—”

I have quite mixed opinions about Warner. This book let us peel off more layers of Warner so we could see how he had so much more depth to him than just an “evil psychopath.” But, like, the author's efforts to backtrack everything felt really lame. Creating excuses for every crazy and cruel thing Warner did in the first book just felt like taking the easy way out to justify Warner’s previous bad actions and make him appear as never being that psychopath he was presented as. I would rather have character development or him proving that he’s becoming or wanting to be better for Juliette would’ve been so much more amazing. Though whenever he would agree to something only because Juliette wanted him to do it and the way he would be so protective over her was so sweet! But, like with Adam, Juliette seemed mostly physically attracted towards Warner. Their relationship definitely has room to grow into something much more intimate and deeper.

“Ignite, my love. Ignite.”

The plot was a very big problem in this book. Why does the author brush over the actual action and intense moments?! This is classified as a fantasy/dystopian, I want more drama and fast paced butt-kicking. The battle scenes were more than what we had in the last book, but it just felt too fast and easy! Barely any struggles or difficulties they faced as they were in the process of taking over a whole sector! And that was like the last 25% of the book, the first 75% was a bunch of convincing, preparing, Juliette and Warner doing their own thing, etc, etc.

“Aaron Warner Anderson, chief commander and regent of Sector 45, son of the supreme commander of The Reestablishment.

He has a soft spot for fashion.”
