Synopsis:
The thrilling second installment in New York Times bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series.
It should have taken Juliette a single touch to kill Warner. But his mysterious immunity to her deadly power has left her shaken, wondering why her ultimate defense mechanism failed against the person she most needs protection from.
She and Adam were able to escape Warner’s clutches and join up with a group of rebels, many of whom have powers of their own. Juliette will finally be able to actively fight against The Reestablishment and try to fix her broken world. And perhaps these new allies can help her shed light on the secret behind Adam’s—and Warner’s—immunity to her killer skin.
Review:
Juliette needed that reality check that she got from Kenji multiple times in the book and the events that unfurled towards the end. She was so mopey and had the biggest victim mindset ever! She seemed fine at the end of the first book but the beginning of the second book made it seem like she was in such a horrible situation because of her perspective on things when she was in such a better place since there are people like her here. She did start improving as the book went on and more high-stakes events took place and she realized she needed to do something rather than just sitting around feeling bad about herself.
“Sticks and stones keep breaking my bones but these words, these words will kill me.”
Adam…is still Adam? The drama between these two was one of the main focuses of the book which was oh so overdramatic. I do agree the revelations were a big deal and, of course at the beginning emotions are high and it’s valid to argue and cry and whatever. Though after a while, it gets annoying how clingy Adam is. Like, c’mon, he was acting like such a child. Juliette made the smarter, better decision but Adam just couldn’t get over it and see this fact causing so much excessive drama.
“You sick piece of shit," Adam says to him, his voice low, measured.
"Such unfortunate language." Warner shakes his head. "Only those who cannot express themselves intelligently would resort to such crude substitutions in vocabulary.”
I still don’t see the appeal over Warner. Like yeah he did a couple of decent things in this book, but like…he’s still obsessive, but like in a less creepy way and more of an admiration way. Don’t get me wrong, that is nice but I just can’t seem to forget his first impression that’s been etched in my mind. I might need some more convincing but I actually don’t get the hype around him just yet 🤷♀️. Though, towards the end of the book, he showed how much he truly cares about Juliette which was sweet.
“The truth," he says, "is a painful reminder of why I prefer to live among the lies.”
Oh, I almost forgot to mention Kenji! Kenji is my absolute favorite! He has so much personality and he’s the smartest of them all. I absolutely fell in love with his character when he gave Juliette the reality check she needed. His friendship with Juliette is so precious, he truly cares so deeply about her which is why he consistently sticks by her side no matter how impossible she’s behaving.
“The truth," he says, "is a painful reminder of why I prefer to live among the lies.”
The plot pacing was similar to the first book. Beginning starts slow and the end is full of events. I listened to the audiobook version of the book so the beginning didn’t feel too slow, but if I was sitting down, it would definitely feel a bit boring. Omega point and all the people who resided there were so cool and reading about their different powers was so fascinating. I wish the author showed more action because seeing Juliette and everyone else in action would’ve been so cool!
Love this review! I read this book a while ago and was a bit fuzzy on the details, and this review was a great recap!
