Book Review: A Curse for True Love
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Fantasy
Sub-Genre: Romance
I feel a little underwhelmed. Though this was such a ride, I’m quite sad to let this world go. I’m tempted to go back and read caraval just to get more of a taste of this world (I think they take place in the same world, right?). This book had me at the edge of my seat and ready to throw fists multiple times throughout the story. It honestly felt too short.

Review:
Evangeline is seriously so determined and delusional, I loved it! No matter how much of a romantic she is, she fights to her best ability and believes so strongly that she is able to do what she puts her mind to. Seeing her belief in love being so strong and unwavering and how she was able to do what seemed impossible due to this driving her was quite admirable. She’s definitely far from the typical female characters I encounter in fantasy books because she lets her heart guide her, and it was interesting to read about such a character.
“I'm broken. I like to break things. Sometimes I want to break you."
"Then break me Jacks.”
My heart softens up to Jacks more and more in each book. This book in particular was so painful to bear through, why is he actually so sweet?? He’s honestly the definition of being a misunderstood villain because once we get through his first few layers of coldness and dismissal, we are able to see his true, caring self. He’s just scared to lose more of his loved ones and he’s ready to do anything to protect them, even if that includes not being able to have them.
“She tried to pull away, but Jacks held tight, knotting her hair in his fist and keeping his forehead pressed to hers. "Please, Little Fox, remember.”
Evangeline was good for Jacks. She showed him to love without fear, that being with each other is what mattered the most. She was willing to sacrifice herself to have him, just how Jacks was willing to sacrifice things to keep her alive. Evangeline and Jack’s story is one to tell. It shows how love needs to be fought for, shows in order to achieve your happily ever after, you need to overcome challenges and hardships first, shows how love is indeed something worthy of taking risks for. Their story was full of pain and loss, but their ending was something they 100% deserved.
“Once upon a time, a girl who believed in fairytales stole the heart of a prince who had sworn to never love.”
The plot was so fast paced and kept me wanting to know how their story would end. The different surprises and twists thrown at us were frustrating and utterly heartbreaking. Multiple times I was so mad because of this particular character, like he was seriously the WORST.
“I am a monster, but whether you remember it or not, I’m your monster, Evangeline.”
Though I also had some problems with some of the events that happened in the story. Some of the major things that happened throughout the book didn’t feel like they were explained thoroughly, like the reason why or how that even happened. They just occurred with no proper build up or explanation other than love, which would be great if it made sense in the context.
—--------------------------------------SPOILER—------------------------------------
Like when she got her memory back from reading the old letters she wrote to herself about not trusting Jacks (which she found in Jacks’s possession btw)...why? Why did those letters get her memory back?? The hollows didn’t do it, how did some hate letters do the job? Am I missing something?
And when she didn’t die from kissing him? He’s loved others before, and others had love him, but all of those lovers had died, why hadn’t Evangeline? Is it really just true love or destiny? I’m not sure, I feel there should’ve been more to explain these things.
—------------------------------------SPOILER ENDS—---------------------------------
“This isn’t just for now, it’s for always, Little Fox.”
The epilogue was the perfect touch, I enjoyed finding out who was telling the story. I didn’t expect that but it was definitely nice, and very cute.
