Kdrama Review: Love Revolution

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Main Genre: Romance, Comedy

I love “Love Revolution” so much. It frustrates me in a way no other kdrama does but also makes me laugh out loud like no other kdrama does. It’s my comfort show and rewatching it simply makes me feel so good from the inside (other than the aspect of the show that frustrates me like crazy). Even though I adore this show, there are some small problems with it which is why I give this show 4 ½ stars rounded up to 5 stars.

Synopsis:

17-year-old Gong Joo-young (Park Ji-hoon), a cute and lovable high school student, falls deeply in love at first sight with the pretty but standoffish Wang Ja-rim (Lee Ruby). Thinking they are destined for each other, Joo-young perseveres in winning her heart, while Ja-rim is almost always annoyed with his gaudy displays of affection.

Review:

Gong Joo-young falls in love with Wang Ja-rim at first sight. Ever since he laid eyes on her, he has been obsessed with Wang Ja-rim and wants to be her boyfriend and get her to like him back. There’s a setback to this plan though, which is the complete opposite personality of these two characters.

Gong Joo-young, whose name actually means princess, is bubbly and sweet. He’s full of energy and talkative and also the cutest boy you may ever see in the way he acts like a little puppy dog. He’s also really whiny and stubborn, he stays persistent in trying to get Wang Ja-rim to like him by sticking by her side and doing the nicest things possible for her. Gong Joo-young may seem like a 2d character with no depth other than liking Wang Ja-rim, but as the show progresses we are able to see how Gong Joo-young isn’t super simple and a complete pushover. He has his past where he’s gone through conflicts, especially to help his friend Lee Kyung-woo (Kim Young-hoon), which shows how loyal and great of a friend he is. I do want to say, the actor who played the role of Gong Joo-young did a fabulous job when portraying different emotions than just his character’s regular outgoing and adorable personality. He did an especially good job in this one scene where Gong Joo-young got extremely angry and yelled. I was shocked by how well his anger came across in that scene, it always stood out to me a lot.

Wang Ja-rim’s name means prince (see how the roles are switched) and she is really reserved and cold, especially towards Gong Joo-young as he was giving her an unnecessarily large amount of unwanted attention. She didn’t want his love or affection, but ever since the beginning she was never completely cold with him. Wang Ja-rim had a bad situation in the past which played a part in the reason she took a long time opening up to Gong Joo-young. She did have an incredible character development process. By the end of the drama, we could see a stark difference in the way she acted with Gong Joo-young in the beginning of their relationship versus the end. I loved seeing her try to become better and open up more to Gong Joo-young as incidents occurred and both of their pasts came up to the surface.

Now, the reason why I love and hate this kdrama all at once is because of the side characters Lee Kyung-woo and Yang Min-ji (Jung Da-en). I liked their teasing relationship and felt like they had nice chemistry between them as Lee Kyung-woo was a bit more cold and handsome while Yang Min-ji was sweet and cute.

The next part may seem like a spoiler about the side characters to some so skip to the part where it says "Spoiler End" if you don't want to see it. But if you’re super interested/don’t care enough about the side characters/already watched it, you can read it if you like. Honestly, I don't consider this a big spoiler as this really doesn't matter too much to the story other than if you're super invested in the side characters like me.

*******************SPOILER STARTS*******************

I loved the moments they had together so much but I was so extremely frustrated at all the potential moments they could’ve had but didn’t. I don’t exactly know why I became so obsessed with these two’s relationship, but part of the reason was probably because of how much Yang Min-ji liked him but he just wasn’t seeing her in the same way. I really wanted Yang Min-ji to get her happily ever after but unfortunately…THEY NEVER GOT TOGETHER (if that wasn’t obvious enough). I held onto my little string of hope until the very end that they would get together or at least something more would begin to spark between them but alas, that did not happen.

********************SPOILER ENDS********************

In general, though, I loved all the side characters and their friendship. The group of friends were funny and enjoyable to watch as they got along with each other so well. I loved seeing them go on trips together and spend time together. They hung out together a lot and were just a lot of fun. They also cared about each other and were supportive which was sweet to see.

The humor in this show may not be liked by everyone as some may find it immature and childish but, keep in mind, this show does take place in a high school setting. I, personally, found it hilarious and I enjoyed the creativity of the remarks and situations. If I’m ever feeling depressed, this is the kdrama I’d come to make me feel better.

The plot of this kdrama is also a minor problem. The first half-ish episodes of this show revolved around Gong Joo-young trying to win Wang Ja-rim’s heart and getting her to open up. The plot for those episodes seemed like a good pace and weren’t boring for the most part as it was quite entertaining. Afterwards, the show focused on the other characters some more for some episodes and threw conflicts towards the main couple which they had to overcome. Overall, those episodes were pretty good and kept my interest though they were a bit more boring at times compared to the first half. Though, it was still interesting and funny so I didn’t have much problem continuing watching this show but some might find them unnecessary episodes, which I agree with but at the same time I enjoyed them and the func concepts. The last few episodes were quite sweet and the main couple had a great ending to the show. The side characters, though, were a different story. The way they ended some of the side character’s story was incomplete. The ending was a complete cliffhanger on Lee Kyung-woo’s part.

The fact there still isn’t a season two after almost four years to tie up any loose ends should be illegal. I know that a season 2 focused on the side characters and taking the focus off the main couple from season 1 would be more intriguing and needed. The problem is this show is so underrated, if it had more recognition then we could’ve had a season 2 by now. For now, I’m just left never satisfied with the ending of “Love Revolution”.

Overall, it’s a fabulous show. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted show with great friendships and you want something that’ll make you laugh, check this show out for sure! Maybe if it gets more viewers, we may be blessed with a season 2 of this show. Now I’m out to search for something similar or close to this show so I don’t get into a k-drama slump which I’m sure is a real thing.
