Synopsis:

There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all she’s gained.

When a new danger appears, Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds, putting not only herself at risk, but every Elite. In order to preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

Review:

Adelina is on the verge of completely losing control of her powers. Her illusions are getting more out of control and her dark whispers just won’t give her a break. Though, in this book, Adelina shows more resilience as there are multiple times she is able to prevent herself from giving in to her wicked thoughts. I liked seeing those moments as it made Adelina seem stronger and more mature. I realized after completing this book how much I actually felt bad for Adelina. Even though sometimes I disliked how cruel and mean she could be to the people around her, it wasn’t until the end where I realized I pitied her a lot for her past and how much she has lost because of the blood fever and her powers. The whispers have haunted her for years now and have caused Adelina a great deal of pain and problems. Many people didn’t like how Adelina kind of redeemed herself for her bad actions in this book as she’s supposed to be the antihero, but I think that’s what added to me realizing Adelina isn’t actually a horrible person and she was too, once, an innocent person with a pure heart. Adelina’s character will always have a special place in my heart.

“I am the nightmare.”

The side characters, as well, I loved a lot. Especially Enzo, Raffaele, Magiano, and Violetta. Violetta and Adelina were the sweetest pair of sisters ever. They cared about each other so much and were attached to each other ‘till the very end. I wish we were able to see more Magiano and Adelina moments, they were such a good pair. Magiano deserved more recognition and a better ending. His ending felt really incomplete. The other characters like Lucent and Maeve weren’t noticed enough either in the series overall. Their relationship was sweet but not really mentioned other than really briefly. This is part of my reason for taking ½ star off; various characters and relationships could’ve been more developed and shown as I would have loved to read more about them including Sergio and Violetta and Michel. The ending threw some information/closings for the side characters at us which were quite brief and sudden.

“Every bone in my body yearns to keep this boy safe, always.”

Talking about the ending…it broke my heart in half!!! I did predict something along the lines of it, just not specifically like that :(. I felt so empty after finishing it. It actually made me cry which I didn’t expect but it was so sad but sweet at the same time. Make sure to read the folktale after the last chapter! I cried all over again after reading the folktale, it was the sweetest but most heartbreaking thing ever.

The pace of the plot in this book was perfect. It wasn’t too slow at the beginning, it was actually pretty fast paced throughout the book. The new concept that was brought in was super cool and I enjoyed it as it made everyone come together and cooperate. There was a lot of action which was super fun to read and tons of team-work and helping each other out which I loved so much. The way everyone had each other's back was so sweet. I didn’t lose interest and was intrigued throughout the book in their mission.

“There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.”

Overall, this book was way better than I expected it to be. This series was such a ride and one of the most creative fantasy books I’ve read in a while. I enjoyed the concepts in this series with the energies of the Elites and how their powers affected them. It was intriguing and unique because of Adelina being portrayed as an antihero which I haven’t read about previously. I would recommend this series for people who want a different and kind of dark fantasy with a banger ending.

“You cannot harden your heart to the future just because of your past. You cannot use cruelty against yourself to justify cruelty to others.”
