Kdrama Review: Tomorrow

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Main Genres: Action, Supernatural

This kdrama was actually SO GOOD. I loved it so much! It has a special place in my heart. This is different from the kdramas I usually watch as this wasn't in the romance genre. I mostly just wanted to watch it because my two favorite actors, Lee Soo-Hyuk and Rowoon, were both in this kdrama so I kind of had to watch it. I just did not expect for every aspect of this show to steal my heart. I've never felt so many strong emotions throughout a kdrama as I felt watching this one. This is definitely in my top 5 (if not top 3) favorite kdramas of all time.

Synopsis:

Choi Joon Woong seeks a job, but it's hard for him to get hired. One night, he witnesses a man trying to end his life and decides to stop him. He gets acquainted with grim reapers Koo Ryeon and Im Ryoong Gu, who belong to a crisis management team. Their purpose is to prevent people from committing suicide. After Joon Woong ends up in a coma and becomes half-human and half-spirit, he is employed by a company of grim reapers as the newest member of the crisis management team.

Review:

Koo Ryeon (Im Ryoong-gu) leads the Risk Management Team (RM Team). They are in charge of preventing suicides as suicide rates have spiked. She seems really heartless and cold on the outside, but deep down she cares a lot about her cases. I loved her character a lot as she knew to be mature when in front of the rest of her team and the people she was helping, but she would get revenge secretly on those who caused the suffering of some of the people in her cases. I admired that a lot about her. Her story of her past life was heartbreaking and goes to show how cruel people can be. Her past life was intertwined with another who worked at the afterlife company, but he didn’t know that, and it was very unexpected, I have to say. Nonetheless, I couldn’t stop thinking about their story even after I finished the kdrama. They deserved so much better! Like so so much better. What made their story even more worse was that they were both such good actors that the pain and heartbreak felt so real and raw. This couple has my whole entire heart. I wished so much that there was more time to see them after he found out about her being in his past life and what they meant to each other. We did get a pretty satisfactory ending on their part as things weren’t left completely hanging and they were able to talk which was nice. I just need more of them!

Moving on (even though I will never get over them), Im Ryung-gu (Yun Ji-on) is the only team member on the RM team before Choi Joon-woong (Rowoon) joined. He and Koo Ryeon work well together as their mature personalities go well together. Im Ryung-gu helps keep order as much as he’s capable of and keeps his team members from doing things that would result in the team dissolving. He’s the brain of the team in terms of that he’s really logical and is able to keep his emotions completely in check for the most part. He does have some regrets and scars from his own past life that we get into. His story is really sad and I was so shocked and mad about how people could do the things they do. Overall, his character helped balance out the team especially once Choi Joon-woong joined.

Talking about Choi Joon-woong, I loved his character a lot as it was good for comic relief in a show covering such serious topics. He was light-hearted, sweet, and very emotional. His emotions running majority of the time helped add another perspective on the RM Team as they were required to save everyone. He provided another way, a more human way, to deal with people and helping them to reduce their risk of suicide. People may think his acting isn’t that good in this show due to his character, but I think he played the role really nice considering what the character’s purpose was in the team. I also related to his character in terms of how he actually cried and seemed sad and angry often because I felt those same emotions with him while watching the show. On the other hand, his other two teammates were not nearly as emotional other than on a couple of occasions.

Park Joong-gil (Lee Soo-hyuk), is another important character in this show. He is the head of the Escort Team which escorts souls to the afterlife. He hates the RM Team because he believes that people who commit suicide are making the decision to end their lives so why save them? I know, a very horrible mindset but, trust me, give him time. He causes a lot of problems throughout the show for the RM Team as he is so against them. It was really hard not to hate his character because of his actions throughout the show. It really took a lot of willpower to forgive him over and over again (lol). I do think his character was needed to add more depth to the show as he added another perspective on multiple occasions. Though, I loved his character so much, and even though I may be a bit biased, he played his role so well! He was dark and cold and everything that you think of when thinking about grim reapers. I ate up every second of his screen time. Even though he’s really sweet in real life, he pulls off these cold-hearted characters so well. I need more of him in these roles. I especially loved his acting in the last few episodes because of all the significant and high emotion things that took place.

The plot of this show never got boring and kept me engaged as each episode was a different case with a different story and topic being covered. The stories were so sad and heartbreaking as it was so painful to watch and know people go through stuff like that and they suffer so much. This show really shed light on some underrepresented topics as well which I thought was nice because some of these topics aren’t talked about enough. I do suggest reading the trigger warnings before watching this show because it deals with some heavy topics, for sure. I love the happy endings that those who suffered get because after hearing their stories, they deserve peace and happiness. Even now, days after watching the show, I’m still reminiscing over the different stories and I’m feeling sad again.

Overall, this was an amazing, must-watch show. Just make sure you are okay with the topics they cover in the show. This show really helps open the eyes of those watching as they bring attention to such important things that people go through. This show goes to show how we can affect people through our words, both positively and negatively, and how important it is to have a balance of logic and emotions. I know I keep on saying “it’s sad, it’s heartbreaking” and if you’re not into sad shows you might be hesitant about watching this. Though, I would say give it a try. Maybe watch the first 2-3 episodes? I don’t necessarily go out of my way to watch sad kdramas either, which also made me question whether I should continue watching this show after the first episode or two, but there’s something bittersweet about this show which I think kept me watching because yes it is quite depressing at times, but there’s always a good ending for those who went through the pain so that's sweet.
